He throttled into 2012 with turns in The Avengers and The Bourne Legacy - and now Jeremy Renner is adding high-octane action to a story of a different kind.
The actor, alongside his on-screen sister, former Bond girl Gemma Arterton, has turned witch hunter in the latest big screen adaptation of Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel.

Where it all started: The story begins as the young brother and sister stumble upon a candy-covered house in the woods
A new trailer for the film shows the pair prowling the woods for little old women who like to devour lost children as they seek revenge for their childhood run-in with a witch whose wicked ways with confections nearly killed them.
Of course, as the Brothers Grimm story goes, the young brother and sister, captured by the witch living deep in the forest, escape her candy-covered house, burning the cannibal in her own oven.

Fast forward 15 years and Jeremy Renner’s Hansel and Gemma Arterton’s Gretel are all grown up and have evolved into merciless bounty hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down blood-thirsty spell binders.
Now immune to harmful spells and curses, they are recruited by the Mayor of Augsburg to rid the town of the evil witch Muriel, played by Famke Janssen, who is planning to sacrifice local children at the witches' gathering during the upcoming 'Blood Moon' night.
But things are not all that they appear as the pair discover on their hunt a much darker power may be responsible for the childrens' mysterious disappearances.

Renner dodges an arrow in one Matrix-style move, and the pair are expert at setting traps for their prey, until they finally meet their match.
Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola described 3D film as a mix of 'blood and gore and action, all the stuff that I love'.

He told ShockTillYouDrop while working on the first draft: '[The film] has a lot of blood and guts. First and foremost, it's an action movie, I think, with horror elements.
'And of course some dark humor as well. But the action and horror are the most import feelings I want.'
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is set for release January 11, 2013.
