News - ‘Witchcraft’ row hits church

An elder in the Guta RaMwari Church in the city has been taken to court for allegedly labelling the church’s leader a wizard.
Clara Vundla (62) denied the charge of contravening the Witchcraft Suppression Act when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Shepherd Munjanja.

She was granted $80 bail and remanded to today for trial.

The state alleges that on March 27 Vundla had a verbal altercation with her church chairman Joseph Malunga (74) at the church’s headquarters in Lobengula Extension.

The court heard Vundla verbally attacked Malunga for allegedly refusing to provide financial support to relatives of late church leaders and labelled him a wizard.

According to court papers, she remarked: “Ungumthakathi, uyaloya (You are a wizard),” in apparent reference to Malunga.

Malunga immediately reported the matter to the police, leading to Vundla’s arrest.

In denying the charge, Vundla said the words were not her own but the “Voice of God”.

She is represented by Masimba Munjanja.
Fiona Ncube-Denhere appeared for the State.
