The words ‘Flash Gordon’ sprung to mind immediately on seeing the first batch of stills from Kenneth Branagh’s Marvel flick Thor. Whether you think that is a good thing or not, it did look camp and silly. Again, you might have a preference for such silliness. After all there’s something silly about superheroes to begin with. I want to see a film of Monty Python’s Bicycle Repair Man one day.
Anyway, clearly the promotional people at Marvel have decided to counter the camp accusations and come up with a mean and moody teaser poster. Branagh’s movie is being post-converted into 3D (boo) along with Captain America. Earlier in the year Branagh defended the move to L.A. Times:
“We came to feel that in our case 3-D could be the very good friend of story and character for a different kind of experience…We travel very long distances in the movie and the opportunity to export and exploit the journey of the hero is really offered up as a great potential enhancement here.”
The film stars Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs), Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean), Rene Russo (Lethal Weapon 3) Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Idris Elba (The Wire), Clark Gregg (Iron Man) and Tom Hiddleston (Wallander).
