Disney has released a couple of new images from director Alan Taylor’s (Game of Thrones) Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World. We’ll get our first look at footage from the film tomorrow when the debut trailer is released, but for now these images do a nice job of teasing the God of Thunder’s return as well as Natalie Portman’s role in the follow-up. It’s clear that Portman’s Jane joins Thor in Asgard in the film, and I’m interested to see how the character adjusts to life in the realm.
Hit the jump to check out the images and for some rather revealing quotes about what to expect from Thor 2 storywise, and check back here tomorrow to catch the first trailer. The film also starsTom Hiddleston, Christopher Eccleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins. Thor: The Dark World opens in 3D on November 8th.
Speaking with USA Today (which also provided the images), Marvel’s Kevin Feige revealed that the film will explore a bit of a love triangle with Portman’s Jane and Jaimie Alexander’s warrior goddess Sif:
“It’s superhero action, but it’s the familiar territory of a love triangle where theparents think your girlfriend is wrong for you,” says Feige. “That’s how the best of these movies work.”
Hemsworth noted that Thor must turn to an unlikely source for help when squaring off against Dark Elf Malekith, played by Christopher Eccleston, as he seeks out his incarcerated brother Loki:
“Needing Loki’s help turns everything on its head,” says Hemsworth. “And it allows us to explore the underlying complexities of their relationship. It really ends up being a kind of chess match.”
Even though he appeared to be thwarted once and for all in The Avengers, it certainly sounds like Loki will be sticking around in the Marvel universe for some time.
Here’s the official synopsis for Thor: The Dark World:
Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
